Empowering wealth: how financial education fuels HNW families’ success

Investing is my passion, but the industry is often filled with acronyms and complexity, making it hard for outsiders to grasp. Unfortunately, this lack of understanding can sometimes lead to others taking advantage, which is why I am deeply committed to equipping high-net-worth (HNW) families with the knowledge and tools they need to understand and navigate the complex world of investing and wealth management.

Financial education is an area I find fascinating because it empowers families to have meaningful conversations about their wealth—conversations that are critical to their long-term success. Yet, it’s an area largely overlooked by my industry. There aren’t many of us out there providing this kind of education, but I see it as mission-critical.

Currently, I’m leading a 5-week course for a family, which includes the matriarch, patriarch, and their adult children. Our first session was all about fostering open discussions about money—exploring how each family member feels, thinks, and behaves in relation to their wealth, and identifying the unique strengths each brings to the table. In our next session, we’ll dive into asset classes, starting with property, since, like many HNW families, this one has significant experience and exposure in real estate.

Every week, I strip away the jargon and break things down to what really matters. Drawing on my experience managing large pools of money in funds management, I teach them simple, effective portfolio management tools they can add to their ‘investment toolbox,’ tailored to use in the context of their own wealth position.

The focus throughout the course is on interaction and making learning fun. I use coloured pens, post-it notes, activities, and games. It’s amazing to see even the most reserved patriarch or matriarch get involved and engaged. I love watching families interact and have fun while learning. Just because I am teaching about investing and finance does not mean it has to be boring!!!

Each session is tailored to the family. No two sessions are ever the same. I also offer broader financial literacy courses for younger generations (rising gen) and even some that involve grandchildren. What and how I teach depends entirely on the family’s unique needs. Seeing families grow their financial skills together while having fun is incredibly rewarding—it truly makes my heart sing!

I offer these courses tailored specifically for families, so if you think your family or someone you know could benefit, feel free to reach out.
